If guns kill people, then spoons made Michael Moore fat.

Posted by Cullin on September 2, 2008

I remember seeing this issue a while back, and I unfortunately forgot about it.  However, it is definitely one of the most important issues facing our world today.

The Harrold ISD, has proposed allowing it’s teachers with a CCL and crisis management training to carry a concealed hand gun on campus.  They cited that since they are over thirty miles away from the closest sheriff’s department, it puts them at risk of not being able to get a response quickly enough in the case of an Columbine like emergency.

Naturally, the liberals who believe that the government is the cure for everything oppose this, claiming that it’s not conducive to learning, and that it would only distract students.  They feel as though some signs and a lone police officer are going to be able to keep students, or anyone else for that matter, from carrying a gun onto campus and harming students and teachers.

Personally, it scares me every time I walk into a “gun-free zone.”  It only ensures me that the only people who have access to weapons are those who have obviously malicious intentions.  This means no way of stopping someone who wants to attack and kill students and teachers.

You have to ask yourself, what if teachers at Columbine and Virginia Tech had access to guns before the shootings?  Wouldn’t we have been able to avoid many of the deaths that occurred?  Wouldn’t someone with proper training been able to effectively stop the assailants after many fewer victims?  Couldn’t both of these events been prevented due to the students realizing that they had very slim chances of  being able to achieve their goals in any way?

It is undeniably irresponsible to leave these children at the mercy of disgruntled persons.   To simply hope that nothing bad is ever going to happen is not being prepared.  This should be an overly obvious question to answer, but still people are letting their fear of an inanimate object overcome their reason and are allowing for possibly devastating events to overcome this and many other school districts as well as college campuses.
